Favorite Red Lips

I wear red lips on a pretty regular basis, especially when I've only put liner and mascara on my eyes. I feel like the bright lip helps light up my whole face, so I look pulled together without a ton of effort. I'm a huge fan of wearing red to the office—and no I never get any weird stares from people. Red lips are such a classic beauty staple; and I think it's more widely accepted as a daytime color now. I feel an extra sense of fierceness from within when I wear red lipstick. I imagine, this must be how Beyonce feels.

The trick to reds is knowing which formula you like best. Personally, I tend to reach for the matte reds. They apply creamy, but dry well and don't move around on you during the day. Glossy formulas don't seem to ever really dry, so I've smudged red across my face a few times. Which is why I now lean toward mattes.

These are my all-time favorite, classic red lipsticks. All are matte formulas, except the Chanel lipstick, and range from orangey-red to blueish-red. The brand doesn't always matter, but I have found that the higher end lipsticks don't dry out your lips, don't crease, and wear longer. So, if I'm going to buy an in your face color, I'm going to make sure it's going to look just as good at noon as it did when I applied it at 8am.

The Chanel Rouge Coco Shines, while not matte, is still one of my favorite formulas. The color isn't as intense as the matte lip colors, and gives you a bit more of a wash of color. They are great for daytime, and aren't so high-maintenance that you need a mirror to re-apply. It goes on more like a lipgloss, but doesn't have the sticky gloss feel to it. This is a great formula to try if you're unsure of red lips during the day.

Want your teeth to look a bit whiter? Reach for a blue-based red lipstick. Since blue is across the color wheel from orange and yellow, it cancels out the yellow-ness of teeth too!

I'm also newly obsessed with the new liquid formulas that dry matte. The Julep Matte Lip Mousse is a current favorite of mine. It feels like velvet as you apply, it's creamy enough that you can move it around on your lips and get a great application, but then it dries matte and you don't have to worry about it again. I'm also really impressed with Revlon's HD Matte Lipcolor and Maybelline's Vivid Matte Liquid. Both are great products and prove you don't need to spend a ton of money for a great liquid lipstick. I'll splurge on a great lipstick, but these liquid lipsticks from the drugstore stand up against the high end liquid lip colors I've tried, so you can't go wrong.
