Summer Skincare Tips

If there is one thing I've learned about summer skincare from growing up in Florida, it's preventative skincare is the first line of defense. The most preventative measures you take before your skin starts to age, the longer you can fend off the aging process all together. Living so close to the equator, summers are hot in Florida, which affects skincare all the way from cleanser to serum to sunscreen. Whether you have dry skin or oily, the summer can be just as hard on your skin as the winter months.

Skincare is merely a perfect blend of products that suit your skin and give it exactly what it needs, while also acting as a barrier against the atmosphere's effects as well. I've rounded up the must have summer products, as well as my own personal tips to beat the heat and UV rays of summer.

Makeup Remover: I didn't always believe in the purpose of a good makeup remover product separate from my cleanser. Once I realized that a makeup remover could wipe away my waterproof makeup without all the harsh tugging and pulling on my delicate eye area, I was sold. I switch off between Bioderma Micellar Water and Estee Lauder Take it Away makeup remover. Both are extremely gentle on the skin around my eyes, neither irritate my eyes or cause dryness, and both leave my eye area completely free of all traces of my waterproof eyeliner and mascara.

Cleanser: It's extremely important to match a facial cleanser to your skin's specific needs. If you have extremely sensitive skin, you should be using a very mild, gentle cleanser without a ton of harsh chemicals. If you have oil prone skin, like myself, don't aim for the harshest, oil eradicating cleanser you can find. Even with oily skin and acne issues, skin often needs a gentler approach. I've come to learn that the main purpose of a cleanser is merely to get the skin clean—not squeaky clean—but clean. I bounce back and forth between Origin's Zero Oil cleanser and Kiehl's Cleanser.

Toner: This product gets a bad rap because toner used to be synonymous with wiping your face with a drying toner (which is still beneficial for people with extremely oily or acne prone skin), but there are so many amazing toners out there now that balance Ph and add moisture if it's needed. My favorite summer time toner is Sunday Riley's Martian Mattifying Melting Water-Gel Toner and it's hands down amazing. I love the way the gel-like toner turns into a water solution as I blend it into my skin. It smells amazing and my skin feels fresh and clean without feeling dry and squeaky clean. It's the perfect balance for my combination skin.

Serum: After toner, I blend in Kiehl's Hydro-Plumping Re-texturizing Serum all over my face and under my eyes, twice a day. I love how smooth and hydrated my skin feels and it's creamy enough to work wonders under my eyes as well.

Moisturizer: A while back, I received a sample of Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel and since then, I can't get enough of it. It's the perfect dose of hydration for my skin during the hot summer months, but the gel version isn't greasy or thick on my skin.

Eye Cream: I literally slather way too much of the Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment with avocado under my eyes every night, but it's heavenly! It starts out as a thick, green, cream that turns into pure hydration liquid as I blend it into my skin. Its cool feeling is amazing and doesn't irritate my eyes. I'm on my second jar (it lasts forever) and seriously can't get enough.

Sunscreen: Summer skincare and sunscreen go hand-in-hand. The only way to have great skin during the summer is to make sure it's protected at all times. My foundation has SPF in it, and if I'm going to be out in the sun for an extended amount of time, I make sure to put sunscreen on any exposed skin. For pool or beach days, I use Josie Maran's Argan Oil Moisturizer with SPF 47 to protect my face and I use Sun Bum sunscreen everywhere else. The scent of Sun Bum alone makes it worth using, but it's seriously the best sunscreen I've ever used. After a day poolside, I always slather on Sun Bum's After Sun lotion. It has the same amazing smell as the sunscreen, and provides an instant moisture surge for parched, sun-kissed skin.

Moisturizing Sheet Mask: I might be a mask-a-holic. Sheet masks are my current obsession and are pretty inexpensive too. I try to use a mask at least twice a week, most times it's a moisturizing mask or one that helps brighten and smooth my skin texture. If I'm breaking out a bit more than usual, I'll use a mask to help clean impurities. My favorite brightening mask is Kiehl's Tumeric and Cranberry Radiance Mask is the best ever and I see immediate results as soon as I wash the mask off my face. Results like glowy, fresh, bright skin kind of results—amazing! The best bang for the buck, however, are the Sephora sheet masks. For six dollars, you get a fantastic sheet mask and a mini pampering session that will leave you feeling destressed at the end.

Skin Tips:
Hydration is key during the summer and not just because it prevents heat exhaustion. Water is a huge contributing factor to a dewy, healthy, glowing complexion. The warmer it is, the more our bodies use water to regulate body temperature. If we aren't replenishing the amount of water our bodies use, there's not a whole lot left to keep skin looking fresh.

If you get bored with the taste of water throughout the day, try adding a fresh slice of lime and a few sprigs of mint.
